The argumentative essay is the third most popular kind of essay. It is generally more complicated than the descriptive essay. Arguments are formulated in support of a central thesis and are usually composed in response to someone else’s arguments. Students must carefully look at the arguments of both proponents and opponents in their essays, using their understanding of the topic to answer the question “What do you think is the proof?” Solid reasoning is required.
The fourth and final most popular type of essay is the comparative essay. Comparative essays compare a particular object or set of objects against one another and analyze how similar or different they are. These essays require extensive investigation to determine the facts and figures that are the most pertinent to the argument being made. The conclusion is an essential element of any comparative essay. It outlines the outcomes of the analysis.
Other kinds of essays required for college credit include the descriptive and argumentative.
